Phil Doleac - Class Leader Conference Notes

team john gibbons

From Classmate Ray Gibbons:  :r.gibbons@woodgibbons.co.uk My son John, who lives with us here in the UK, competes for the USA in Modern Pentathlon at the Junior level. He was US Youth A Champion in 2007 and the Junior Champion in 2008 and 2009 and competed in the Youth A World Championships in Johannesburg (2007) and the Junior World Championships in Portugal (2007) and Egypt (2008). He is enroute to compete in the 2009 Junior World Championships in Taiwan. The modern pentathlon is essentially a military sport (sometimes called the military pentathlon rather than modern pentathlon) and Gen. Patton competed for the US when it was first introduced at the 1912 Stockholm Olympics. I wonder whether you might pass this email on to our classmates, or have some ideas on how we might publicize his cause. It is not easy to interest people here in supporting someone competing for the US!

We have just put up a website that gives his complete story: www.teamjohngibbons.com. He is also mentioned on the Olympic Committee website  www.usapentathlon.org/ (see: http://usapentathlon.org/news/article/13667 but be prepared to read down the page to see him mentioned.)

All the best and Beat Navy, Ray Gibbons

LTG Jimmy Lovelace Change of  Command May 4, 2009

On May 4 at Ft McPherson, Georgia,  LTG Jimmy Lovelace relinquished command of U.S. Army Central (ARCENT -- formerly Third Army – “Patton’s Own”), which he led for nearly 17 months at the end of a distinguished 39-year military career.

At the Awards Ceremony just prior, he received the Distinguished Service Medal for his remarkable leadership, while wife Gail fittingly received both Department of the Army and U.S. Central Command awards for her many caring contributions in the community.  The night before, Lace hosted a gathering of about 30 family, friends and classmates on base.

In his retirement speech which was by turns humble, humorous and touching, Lace expressed his deep appreciation to the many people who shaped his life and career, with an especially moving tribute at the end to wife Gail and to his father who joined Third Army exactly 64 years ago to the day.   He also paid heartfelt tribute to West Point and his classmates, 17 of whom were in attendance.

Testimonials from Chief of Staff of the Army, Gen George Casey, and the Commanding General of U.S. Central Command, Gen David Petraeus, made it abundantly clear that Lace was a soldier’s soldier who, true to our class motto, rendered selfless service with integrity.  His steadfast and deep devotion to soldiers was also markedly evident at every turn of the ceremony.

Lace and Gail, you have made us all proud many times over.

Send LTG Lovelace Congratulations!

From John Fishback - Attached please find our photo from the Thailand Founders Day dinner. The photos were by decades of graduates so I am there with the former and last Supreme Commander of the Thai Armed Forces, GEN Boonsrang Niumpradit, Cl of 71, and Steve Sykes, Class of 1978.
At the dinner, the Ambassador of the US present GEN Boonsrang with the State Departments highest medal, the Legion of Merit for which GEN Boonsrang definitely deserved as one of the finest examples of a foreign grad of USMA. Coincidentally, the head of the Philipine Armed Forces is also Cl of 71. We must has trained them right !!

I am happily retired on the beach here in Thailand and have two guest condos on the beach for visitors as well. JD Smith was my last victim.

We recommend a cruise to any company looking for a reunion idea.  Everyone who went considers it probably the best vacation they have ever had.  Especially the most time to just share time with company mates since graduation.

We had a D3 Reunion Cruise to Alaska the last week in July.  The night before we embarked we were joined by Kris Davis, Brian Davis' widow, for Dinner and a memorial for Brian.  This was two weeks after his death.

A case each of wine and champagne were specially labeled for us and brought on board with special permission by the cruise line.
